CMA CGM, one of the world’s leading shipping companies, has announced an update in its rates by applying a high season surcharge to all cargo moving from northern Europe to Latin America. This adjustment, which will come into effect from July 1, 2024, will remain in force “until further notice,” according to the French company.
This measure responds to CMA CGM ‘s commitment to offer its clients reliable and efficient services, adapting to global market conditions. The surcharge will apply to all shipments from major ports in Northern Europe, which includes regions such as Scandinavia, the Baltic, Atlantic Spain and Portugal, and will be destined for ports on the west coast of South America, Central America, Mexico, and the east coast of Central America and the Caribbean. However, the French West Indies, French Guiana, Gustavia and Philipsburg are excluded.
Details of the fare surcharges
The amounts of this surcharge have been set at 125 euros per 20-foot container and 250 euros per 40-foot container. In addition, other charges related to fuel, terminal handling (THC) at origin and destination, as well as security and safety surcharges may apply.
On the other hand, CMA CGM has also reported on the implementation of a Freight All Kind (FAK) tariff for cargo mobilized from Asia to northern Europe, which has been in force since May 15, 2024. This fee covers all Asian ports, including Japan, Southeast Asia, and Bangladesh, and will apply to dry cargo, OOG, empty pay, and reefer.
Impact of CMA CGM’s new fees
The adjustment in CMA CGM rates underscores the importance of keeping up with changes in the shipping sector and how these may affect business operations between continents. The new amounts set seek to cover additional costs arising from high demand and fluctuations in the market, ensuring that the shipping company continues to provide an efficient and safe service to its global customers.
