Chinese exports have reached a record $540 billion during the first two months of the year, in an effort to get ahead of tariffs imposed by the United States. According to China’s General Administration of Customs, Chinese exports increased by 2.3%, while imports fell by 8.4%, resulting in a historic trade surplus of nearly $171 billion.

Chinese companies speed up shipments amid tariff threats

The growth in Chinese exports is largely due to the imminent imposition of higher tariffs by the United States, prompting Chinese companies to accelerate their shipments. Zhiwei Zhang, president and chief economist at Pinpoint Asset Management, commented: “The impact of higher U.S. tariffs on Chinese exports will likely be reflected next month.”

Despite the boom in the tech sector, domestic demand in China remains weak due to the slowdown in the real estate sector. Chinese imports have fallen to their lowest level since 2020, reflecting slow domestic demand that is also impacting other countries.

Government measures to boost the economy

In response to this situation, the Beijing government has announced an expansion of the budget deficit with the aim of achieving 5% economic growth this year. However, China’s economy remains vulnerable to a potential global trade war. Although only 15% of Chinese exports are directly directed to the United States, a significant number of goods are shipped through third countries like Vietnam and Mexico.

Undoubtedly, China faces a complex economic challenge due to trade uncertainty and low domestic demand. While companies are looking to mitigate the impact of tariffs, the government is trying to stimulate economic growth with fiscal measures. Nonetheless, the future of Chinese trade will largely depend on the evolution of trade tensions with the United States and the country’s ability to strengthen its domestic demand.
