South America’s maritime infrastructure is on the verge of a historic leap. The National Port Authority (APN) has confirmed that Chancay Port will officially begin commercial operations on June 1st, following the completion of its testing phase and final approval from Cosco Shipping Ports Peru.
This port will become the first in South America capable of receiving vessels of up to 22,000 TEUs, positioning itself as a key hub for international trade.
A new chapter in regional logistics
With the launch of Chancay Port, Peru is not only upgrading its port infrastructure but also strengthening its role as a strategic bridge between Asia and South America.
The APN announced that a specific tariff system is being developed, tailored to the new services that will begin in June, boosting regional trade and attracting new investments.
The Bi-Oceanic railway: continental connectivity
As part of a broader vision of connectivity, Chancay Port will play a key role in the development of the Central Bi-Oceanic Railway Corridor, a project aimed at linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans through Peru and Brazil.
In a recent meeting in Lima, the Minister of Economy and Finance, Raúl Pérez Reyes, along with Peruvian authorities and representatives from China, confirmed that they will seek a high-level meeting with Brazil to define the country’s role as a strategic partner in the mega-project.
The bi-oceanic railway would significantly reduce export times and costs for Brazilian products such as soybeans and meat to Asia, using Chancay Port as a gateway to the Pacific. This project is also part of China’s global Belt and Road Initiative.
A milestone in Peru’s foreign trade
The start of operations at Chancay Port and the momentum behind the bi-oceanic railway are part of a high-impact regional integration strategy.
This new phase will not only transform Peru’s logistics landscape but will also cement its role in global supply chains. All signs point to this mega-project becoming one of the most significant engines of development in the decades to come.
