Mexico’s Interoceanic Corridor has taken a historic step with the arrival of the cargo ship “Glovis” at the port of Salina Cruz, Oaxaca. Coming from South Korea, this vessel marks the beginning of a new era for southeastern Mexico, positioning itself as a key hub for international trade.
A step forward in port infrastructure
According to José Antonio Estefan Garfias, director of Mexico’s Interoceanic Corridor, the cargo ship transported 600 Hyundai vehicles destined for the East Coast of the United States. This event highlights the significance of the Multipurpose Dock of the National Port System Administration (Asipona) of Salina Cruz, as this is the first vessel of its kind to utilize this strategic infrastructure.
Multimodal transport to the United States
The unloaded vehicles will be transported by the Birmax freight train via the “Z” railway line to the port of Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, where they will continue their journey to the United States. The unloading operations, which take three days, showcase the efficiency and capacity of the Salina Cruz port within the corridor.
Mexico promotes Mexico’s Interoceanic Corridor as an alternative to the Panama canal
President Claudia Sheinbaum highlighted the progress of this megaproject, which aims to position itself as a strategic alternative to the Panama Canal. With key connections between Salina Cruz, Coatzacoalcos, Palenque, and the Guatemalan border, Mexico’s Interoceanic Corridor is set to transform the region into a world-class logistics hub.
Improvements in port infrastructure, such as the installation of state-of-the-art cranes and the construction of grain storage facilities, have been made possible through public and private investments. This project not only boosts international trade but also creates jobs and drives development for local communities within Mexico’s Interoceanic Corridor.
