Through the Isthmus Corridor (CIIT) project, it seeks to promote the development of nearby communities and bring well-being to improve their quality of life.

Captain Juan Francisco Ríos Gómez, Director General of Ports, attached to the General Coordination of Ports and Merchant Marine of the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar), highlighted the competitive advantages of the geolocation of this corridor for the mobilization of various goods. The Isthmus Corridor connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and has the ports of Salina Cruz, Oaxaca; Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz; Puerto Chiapas, Chiapas; and Dos Bocas, Tabasco, interconnected by the Isthmus of Tehuantepec railroad and a highway system.

In addition, this interoceanic corridor offers direct access from Asian ports to various points on the Central Coast and the United States.

Adding quality of life through the Isthmus Corridor

Among the business benefits of the Isthmus Corridor, 12 development poles for well-being are envisioned, to improve the quality of life and transportation of nearby communities. There are 1,189 kilometers of railroad tracks with a capacity for 65 cars that can carry up to 400 passengers.

Another important benefit is the possible construction of 80,000 square meters of parks, walkways and sports spaces. Raymundo Pedro Morales Ángeles, general director of the CIIT, emphasized that to make this possible it is necessary to reduce the costs of moving goods, since currently a trip from Shanghai, China, to Atlanta, United States, costs 3,709 dollars at the port of Salina Cruz.

The economy and the Isthmus Corridor

In the panel “Economic Benefits of Nearshoring in Mexico”, the advantages of the development of the Isthmus Corridor were discussed. Among them, the construction of infrastructure, the training of customs personnel, the relevance of a solid regulatory framework and the adoption of digital technologies as key factors to adapt to the new trend of relocation of production lines in Mexico were highlighted.
