To reactivate foreign trade and increase exports, Puerto Chancay, in Peru, is focused on offering more direct and faster routes to China. Currently, sea freight to China takes between 31 and 36 days, depending on the destination and logistics of transshipments. Puerto Chancay stands out for its ability to reduce these times, improving efficiency in transportation.

Puerto Chancay and its relationship with Asia

Richard Salazar, executive director of the Banana Marketing and Export Association of Ecuador (Acorbanec) points out that: “All logistics options are important for the benefit of foreign trade and, in this case, for regional trade. For us, it is key if this new Port of Chancay can create better or faster and more direct routes to East Asia, where we are aiming for the growth of banana exports in the markets of China, South Korea and Japan, but particularly with China, with whom we even have a Trade Agreement.”

The largest percentage of banana export movement falls in this area of Ecuador, around 5,500 containers are mobilized with the Ecuadorian product, which is why Puerto Chancay would have an important role for this industry, since the percentage of transport could be divided towards one more route and speed up its arrival in Asia.

Less time, more direct routes

This reduction in time will also be achieved to a large extent by the Seaport of Guayaquil, as China Ocean Shipping Company Limited (Cosco) aims to open a route that goes from Guayaquil to Puerto Chancay. This will allow for a direct route to Shanghai and Dalian.

Puerto Chancay is expected to have a great impact, as this work is considered one of the most important investments, considering about USD 3,600 million. It is important to consider that it will serve as a stopover for ports in Chile, Ecuador and Colombia and that it will reduce congestion in the port of Callao.
