Wind-powered cargo ship receives EU support

The cargo shipOrcelle Wind” has just received a financing of some, not insignificant, 9 million euros from the Horizon Europe financing group, but what makes a group belonging to the European Union carry out a capital injection of this type in a ship? Below we explain the details behind this movement.

Elaborating more on this vessel, it is important to highlight that the Orcelle Wind is a huge ship, which despite being in the process of development, will use wind energy as the main propellant to mobilize the 220 meters that it will have, once it comes into operation during the year 2026 or 2027. Among the advantages that this ship will have, once its construction is finished, will be its capacity to transport up to 7,000 cars, in addition to other large components.

A cargo ship with these characteristics, and which is also powered by wind energy, represents a significant saving of resources for Wallenius Wilhelmsen, the company behind the development and commissioning of the ship.

A cargo ship of great importance for Wallenius Wilhelmsen

The cargo ship Orcelle Wind is the first vessel built under the Roll On, Roll Off (RoRo) concept intended to sail in deep waters, demonstrating that it is possible to achieve milestones of this type even in ships of such size and weight. This vessel seeks to reduce, and in the future eliminate completely, the dependence that the company has on energy sources such as coal, which will reduce operational costs and in turn generate less pollution to the environment.

According to Roger Strevens, Vice President of Global Sustainability, Wallenius Wilhelmsen is fully proud to have the support of the best partners in technology both operationally and academically, in addition to highlighting the importance of its customers, who have been a key point in the progress of this project.

With the ship Orcelle Wind, the Wallenius Wilhelmsen company aims to achieve a reduction of up to 90% in polluting emissions in its fleet of vessels, which is quite promising considering the logistical movements that will have to be made to achieve it.

However, a good technological evolution should never be separated from insurance for cargo ships that can guarantee the safety and successful transport of tus mercancías alrededor del mundo con coberturas que se adapten específicamente a lo que requieres como negocio.

At ONUS Insurance we have the best experts in risk detection, providing you with the best service and quality cargo insurance options in an increasingly competitive market.
